Which winter squash/es do you consider to be the best for flavor, sweetness, storage and any other characteristics you think are important?
And which are just so-so?
Dean, I wish I could grow a greater variety of winter squash in my gardens. Cool nights and a fairly short season puts a limit on them apparently. I have to stay below 100 days to maturity and then it still seems a little difficult.
I "get away with" Early Butternut, acorns and buttercup (Burgess). Of those, I really prefer the buttercup for flavor, sweetness, & storage. And, acorns seem to have definite sweetness and flavor limits. Finally stopped growing them because of the disappointments.
I wish I could grow other buttercup/kabocha types but that hasn't been the case. Or, at least they haven't been very productive plants in our gardens. The Burgess strain has just never failed to please.
