Do hot pepper plants or loose hot peppers sell well at farmers markets? Or do people just look and smile?

I sold a few peppers last year at the market here in NH, only because that's all I had were literally, a few peppers to sell. (hot peppers that is). Green peppers sold better for me, but a lot of sales is dependent on presentation. I think if my hot pepper selection was more abundant, people would have paid more attention to them. Also, recipes for salsas or other ways of using peppers helps to familiarize people to their uses. I haven't tried selling the plant itself, but I bet if you paired it with cilantro and a couple of large tomatoes, and labeled is as "Salsa kits" it would look nice and sell pretty quickly. I may try that myself! Good Luck

Last year was the first time I tried to sell hot peppers and loose hot peppers. The plants did sell. The Loose peppers did not. I ended up with so many that I began putting them into sandwich size bags and giving them out to friends and fellow employee at the restraunt that I work at. As of now, I alreadly have some of those "freebees" asking if I will be selling those peppers this year. So maybe my free give aways are going to pay off this year???????I hope so because I expanded my line of hot peppers to include Cherry Bomb, jalapeno, yellow hot wax and habaneros. Heidi

Hang in there and your business will grow,or,you could look for a larger more diverse market. I've been selling peppers, fruit and plants, for many years. This was topic awhile back and I posted a couple pictures.
Here is a link that might be useful: peppers

Thanks all of you for the ideas. I was thinking of typing up a sort of pre-need death certificate for the hot peppers. I'm sure it would be good for sales in a way and would have some suggestions for handling hot peppers, warnings, and disclaimers, written in a semi-humorous manner. One variety I'm raising will be Manzano which is pretty hot, very productive and supposedly after a few years produces 500-1000 per plant...

elrem2002: I got a great chuckle for myself when I pulled up the suggested "pepper" link. Those were the pictures that had inspired me a few years ago to grow more colorful peppers. Your display is definetely awsome. Thanks again!!!!!!! Heidi
