What's the most unusual item you successfully sell?

| Hi All,
I'm a newbie and trying to think of unusual crops to sell to maximize profits.
Some of the different items I'm going to try to sell are cardoon, sorrel, rampion, salsify, jerusalem artichoke, globe artichokes, tomatillos, bitter melons.
Any unusual items people successfully sell at their farmer's markets? Also would be interested in hearing what experiences people have selling the items I'm considering selling. |

| I tried artichokes a couple of times but found Ohio is too far north to get decent sized chokes or many of them. So had to sell them for something like $2 a piece for undersized artichokes so they did not sell. I found artichokes, being a tender perennial really need a couple of years to get going but also cannot take winter temps below -10F, even with heavy mulch. I believe cardoons are the same way (close relative). Bitter melons will sell as long as you have a SE Asian population. But any of this will sell as long as you know how to cook it, enjoy eating these items and can tell your customers what to do with them. My most unusual item last year was celeriac which started selling well once I got a handle on when to harvest and how to prepare it |

| boulderbelt, I was going to do celeriac, but though it might be picky. How did you grow it? Any tips? |

| It's easier than celery. Get it in before a hard freeze |

| I have a small home based business selling fresh cut herbs and have recently started growing produce that is not readily available in stores. I currently sell to a caterer, restaraunt and produce store. The biggest sellers for me is: patty pan squash, lettuce mixes, arugula, 5 different colours of carrots, eight different colours of cherry tomatoes, asparagus peas and of course fresh bunches of herbs. Make sure you have a booklet ready that gives the customers ideas on how to prepare. Think outside the box and source out all the seeds catalogues for different produce. Good Luck! |

| If we are calling patty pan squashes and arugula unusual I guess just about everything I grow is pretty unusual. Arugula is a great seller for me as are heirloom lettuces (I do grow one heirloom green leaf but all the others are not what you would find at the grocery) Recipes are an excellent suggest. Also learn how to cook/prepare everything you grow because you will be asked and you will sell more if you have a ready answer on how to prepare/what it tastes like. |
