Soft Strawberries

Last year I got a great crop of qualnart strawberries. About 3000 plants worth. Only one problem, the minute they were picked, they turned soft and mushy and impossible to take to market. They tasted great and looked wonderful, but could only be used in making jelly and wine. What did I do wrong? LeeH

RE: Soft Strawberries

I am not familiar with that variety, but some varieties are softer than others by their very nature. Also, I've read that if you fertilize in the spring, it tends to make them soft also...Ann

Lee, check your spelling of the variety. I can't find anything named that.

Excessive nitrogen can cause soft berries (also excessive leaf growth). Possible?
