We ordered one the day "Growing for Market" arrived that contained the column on it and the ad. We;re very pleased. We are keeping an 8 by 24 foot insulated [5.5 inches thick] building at 45 to 50F with just a 6000 BTU air conditioner.[No magic here though. The CoolBot just makes the unit work a lot herder than it would as an ordinary room cooler with a minimum setting of 66F.

It's pricey, but it has replaced three refrigerators which I think will save us a bundle in the long run. If we had a larger air conditioning unit, temperatures could be taken down even to below 32F.

We humidify the air with a free-standing evaporative cooler when we load the cooler with market flowers. Zinnias don't hold up well at temperatures near freezing--hence the 45F temperature. Verdict is not in yet on using the evaporative cooler as a humidifier but we love the CoolBot.

Readers are invited to visit our website where we share text and photos about our no-tillage, permanent mulch growing system.

Good wishes,

Does anyone know where to find the do-it-yourself plans for constructing a Coolbot for $100? I've looked on the net and could not find

I have used a CoolBot for about a year and a half to cool an 8x14x8 floral cooler. It has worked great. The mention to use heat tape on a thermostat to melt frost on your a/c unit is no longer the way to go. Especially if you have to pay someone to install it! Get the real CoolBot for about $300.00. You will not regret it. I promise! You will no longer be controlled by your cooler, your cooler will be controlled by your CoolBot. Period.

In the past, a refrigerator would use R-12 refrigerant, and an air conditiner R-22, each with characteristics suitable to the application. Not sure what is used nowadays. I suspect operating a window air conditioner outside of the design criteria is not very efficient. In fact, the website admits it will struggle to cool the final few degrees (definitely outside the design specs at this point) $300 seems a bit pricy for this device, probably as much as one would pay for the air conditioner itself. It "fools" the thermostat, but cleverly also has evaporator icing protection. The inventor truely found a niche market.
