Tomato plants for a plant sale- re-pot??

Hi All,

I need advice from you experienced tomato sellers! I started extra tomato seedlings for a plant sale. The plant sale is May 6, two weeks from now. I obviously started seeds too early. The tallest tomato seedlings are 7" tall in 4 inch pots. I think it's best to transplant them into bigger containers, right? I ordered 5 1/2 inch pots- but they won't be here until next week. I'm on travel for work Mon-Fri. Should I harden them off this week and then transplant to bigger pots on Friday? That would give them a week to acclimate. Or will they get way tall out on the shady porch. Or should I leave them under lights until I get back. I won't be here to drag them in and out of sun the first few days outside. What would you suggest??? Next year I'll start later!

Thanks,
Beth

Hi Beth,

I'm zone 6 in PA so you are ahead of me. I sow my tomatoes on 3/12 and transplant seedlings in 4 packs. They are now for sale this weekend 4/22. They'll keep in the 4pks till I am sold out. I have a greenhouse and ask my customers to wait to plant till after 5/15. If you have them in a warm area you will need to harden them off before you plant out.
