We don't even start planting potatoes until May 15. You aren't late. But I'd plant the long season potatoes first, if you're going to stagger them, to give them more time in the ground. Then plant your short-season ones. They should all be fine-- you have enough time.

I also appreciate the reassurance that i'm not late in planting, but can't help notice that you're from NM and probably get a lot more heat there than I do here in the PNW.
My biggest concern is that we get early fall rains and I have to dig small spuds in the mud. Blah....
It does seem to be drying a bit and maybe by next week i'll be able to get most of them in the ground.

I grew up west of Eugene,OR and my folks still live there. It is usualy mid-may before they can even till the soil (too wet) and to think about planting. If it is too wet good chance the spuds will just rot.
But that's not really your question, you might need to consider what makes the early varietes early? Is it tempuratures or just they grow faster? If it gets hotter they might not grow as well as the long season spuds.
Not much answers I guess but things to research.

Thanks for the input. I managed to till the beds and get all the potatoes in the ground yesterday before the next wave of rain blew in today. It's a bit soggy but should hopefully dry out soon before any rot issues come up (knock wood).

Follow up.

Since planting it's rained heavily, off and on for 3 weeks now. A strip of the beds are in near standing water. The drier parts of the bed have plants growing well but the wet areas haven't shown yet. I'm giving them time but think they are probably rotted.
I still have time to replant the bad areas but if it doesn't stop raining soon I have more problems than that to deal with. Like what to do with all my other transplants that need to go out.

I think I'll use my spare time to build a garden ark.
