Good way to ship plants.

Does anyone have a good method of shipping plants? Here is the problem. I will be shipping four or five plants in 4" square pots, in 12X12X8 USPS Priority Mail boxes . Packing them so they will not slide around from side to side isn't a problem. Using newspaper to add a little tension between the sides of the box and pots is even enough to keep them from bouncing around too much. My question is, how to I prevent the plants from getting destroyed if a postal worker tosses the box ten feet across the truck, or is unable to understand what "this side up" means?

A photograph of any packing methods would be helpful.

cut cardboard the size&shape of the top of the pot diameter, making a slit for the stem and insert this piece into the top of the pot. You now have "caps" to prevent soil and/or plants from coming out of their pots, even if they are upside down. Put 1-2" of peanuts into the bottom of a box, then cut a piece of cardboard the size of the bottom of the box. Place the pot(s) on the cardboard you just cut and tape each pot to it, wrapping the tape over the top of each pot, securing the cardboard "caps" and down each side of each pot, securing it to the sheet of cardboard. Place this assembly into the box on top of the peanuts, then sift more peanuts in around the plants, filling the box fully. Tape up the box securely and you have it. Have the pots moist but not overwet.

This is a method I've seen used by professional shippers and it worked well. A bit of trouble to unpack, but if care is taken they should reach perfectly.

Hope this helps.

Better check out the rules and regulations on shipping live plants. Some states are very strict on the shipping of plants with soil on the roots.

No quarantines here. The only restriction I would have is in regards to those states that do not allow potential hosts of SOD to be imported. Since I do not grow those plants it does not affect me.
