I've found if I stake my tomatoes, and just let them lay (sprawl) I don't have problems with winds. But downside is I have more problems with dirty fruits and it's harder to pick.
I had a friend that had lovely tomatoes, several hundred feet, all staked nicely and looking wonderful.....then a big wind came and snapped everyone of the off at the ground.

Watch went to warning and then it hit - a least the first cell is past but we had pea-sized hail plus downpours. These are 4" tall plants (planted deep). Another cell coming about 8pm. At least I just planted half.

And lovely, forecast shows a low of 44 (remember that's in town and it gets colder here) Tuesday night and highs only in the 60's this week. They'll survive, but I'm wondering if I should hold off til Wed to plant most of my stuff that hasn't seen that low a temp yet...

Our forecast last night was 43 in town, it got to 46 in town. Now it's 52, so nothing was affected. Most of the time, that's the way it works. Also, even if the tomato plant gets broke off, as long as the root system is established somewhat, it will grow back. It just needs a leave above. I've had several plants fall over and look terrible, and come back within a couple of days.
