legal for trade scale

| New this year to farmers market and just found out I have to have a certified scale. Already spent more than I imagined. Anybody have a reasonable price site they shop at? |

| I am of no help in this department. I have a certified scale, first time this year. My markets I attend are small and no one has ever come around to check. I am all "legal" now. I was given my scale by a family friend. They own several grocery stores and they were replacing one. The printer broke and they didn't want to get it fixed. The scale part and calculations part is fine. Some suggestions, buy one that is battery powered. The one I have is not. I run it off an inverter plugged into the lighter outlet. Also, spend a little extra and get one that does price computations. It is a quick way to do it. It speeds up the sales. Remember this is more of an investment. I heard of a scale company that rents/leases them. Maybe you could look into that as an option. Good luck. |

| I use a non digital hanging scale at the farmers market and a non digital butcher's scale at my farm. both are legal for trade and have been recently (in the past 2 weeks) sealed by the county. I had been told years ago that if a scale was not digital it was not legal for trade. In Ohio at least, that is not true according to the weights and measure guys. |

| Here's where I got mine. No Legal for Trade scale is cheap unfortunately but some are way more expensive than others. http://www.itinscale.com/easyweigh_scales.htm To my knowledge, and it can be very limited, hanging scales can be legal but they must have "legal for trade" somewhere on the face of the scale. | the last one that I bought cost about $100 on ebay. It was new and battery powered. My first one is price computing, which is nice but costs more. |
