Some late July pictures...

Well it is late July and the windows in the house are open and it is 69 degrees. That is not usual for these parts. It is usually still in the upper 80's at least! Now if we could get some rain, it would be nice. We are finding new ways to miss it. One of these days, it will be ours again!

I thought I would share some pics of our later crops. Our earlier crops are producing, but they are nothing to look at. Many weeks of picking and neglected weeding has made them look bad. Here is the nice looking stuff!

Cantaloupe, personal sized again. We have so many people who grow huge melons. I didn't want to compete, so I created my own niche market. Always sold out last year, hope it happens again this year.

Story of the last two months, this is beside one of the sweet potato patches.

very nice. our okra plants look like crap and are producing.your okra looks amazing and not producing yet. go figure.

What varieties of melons have you found work well?

And is that just a basic weave support for your toms? Looks so tidy!

Nice pics. My okra looks about like yours; the late planting we all had will make it not much of a year for okra. Your sweet potato vines are much more lush than mine.

How are your fall high tunnel tomatoes? I am worried that when the night temps drop into the 40's, it will make my fruit mushy.

Just saw the national weather and it looked like there would be rain in your area. Did you get it, and was it too much? Not sure exactly where you are.
It's been crazy up here. 45 at night for several nights. Tomatoes in the high tunnel are not ripening. What a year!

Joey: We grow the personal sized. I am very happy with Starlight, Sunshine, Yellow Doll and New Orchid.

Randy: The okra is just starting to produce, barely.

Cole: Our fall tomatoes are always pretty good. I have finally got them planted at the right time, I hope! I have moved my planting date up almost a month in the last 3 years.

We plant mainly Florida 91. This year we added Phoenix. Both of these are Heat set tomatoes and set better when it is hot. Since these are growing and setting during the hottest months of the year. We are also planting Taxi, BHN 871 and BHN 589.

Here was my final harvest 2 years ago that I sold at our December 3rd farmers market. Most of these were picked before Thanksgiving, most were blushing.

Another reason for these firmer tomatoes is they mature more slowly after picked and keep longer. I haven't experienced the mushy tomatoes.

We are getting rain. We have had over half inch so far and it is suppose to rain until Tuesday. My parents 40 miles south of me had over 1.5 inches so far.

My high tunnels have had the sides down since Friday Night. They will probably remain that way until Tuesday. We had a high in the high 60's on Saturday and Sunday.

This weather is crazy! We are lucky the first planting of high tunnel tomatoes are almost done. I am waiting for my 2 outside planting but with this weather, they aren't ripening very fast. My melons aren't ripening very well either.
