Do you "absolutely" need a scale. There are other ways to sell that don't require the use and expense of a scale. I would look at those first.

Having to make time to bunch/package will probably cost more money than a legal for trade scale costs in the long run. A few ounces here and there add up over a season. A good scale will last for many years.

We got a treadle sewing machine at a yard sale for $25. It was a good, functional machine, and we gave it to some friends who had wanted one (no electricity in their yurt). They, in turn, gave us a hanging scale, a Hanson model 842, which they'd gotten at a yard sale for fifty cents. We got a new pan for it at Agway for about $30. We took it to our local Sealer of Weights and Measures, who sells heating oil as a day job. He took us over to his garage, rummaged around and found his weight set and tested it. This scale will weigh up to 20#, but isn't perfect in telling 2 ounces from 3. It's not temperature compensated either, but he looked it over and decided it was better than many that are out there in service, and it doesn't have "not legal for trade" printed on it anywhere, and he put his seal on it.

A recap: Not digital, and used, but for a total outlay of $55, it works just fine. Keep your eyes open, and use your friends wisely.
