Roasted Pumpkin Seeds?

Posted by JASdesign Z4 SD (My Page) on

Hi, just joined and this is my first year with the local farmers market, so I have lots of questions.

My primary item will be pumpkins but I have been told that there are a lot of vendors with pumpkins so I am trying to come up with something different. Thought of painting pumpkins and roasting the seeds. I was wondering if there is anything I should be worried about with selling packages of homemade roasted/toasted pumpkin seeds?

Thanks, Julie

My suggestion is come up with something the others do not have. To draw the crowd to your stand. We grow Giant Pumpkins for this reason.

You need to look into what your state regulates for sale as food and as a prepared food. Selling the seeds already prepared as food (roasted) will probably require a license as will the kitchen you prepare the food in.

You might try growing those specialty pumpkins developed for seed production and show folks the roasted seed or give out samples when they buy a pumpkin.

Roasted pumpkin seeds are my favorite thing about the fall, but most of my friends don't really care for them.

Invite a senior Girl Scout troop to come and paint some, then you can charge a little more for those so the girls can raise a little money, you will sell more because people love to help a good cause, the girls will love it because scouts are always needing cash for trips. I would only choose older girls that way their artwork is worth buying.
