Luck with salad mixes?

Does anyone have bad luck with salad mixes? I have planted 3 different mixes this year. Only oak leaf came up in the first, nothing in the second and something I can't identify in the third. Where as if we plant individule such as summer crisp or black seeded Simpson we get almost 100% germination rate.

    I used to plant different varieties, instead of buying premixed mixes.

    Direct-seeding didn't work for me this year but I don't know if it was me or the weather or the mix. I'd have to try flats before I pass judgment but I think it's cheaper to buy bulk seed and mix your own.
