Shelling Peas are they worth it?

I am thinking about putting in a large crop of shelling peas for market garden. I have only put shelling peas for personal use in the past. My question is , is it worth it? Now I know about taste, can't compare, but I look at the space and the ease of growing ( I have never had any problem growing peas) and the final out put , and I wonder, compared with what frozen peas in the store, cost,is it worth it to grow them. I know the big producers have big equipment to process with, but it seems like by the time I grow them, harvest, shell them,is it worth it? Imput would be appreciateted.

I sell them in the pods. I don't think anyone could afford to buy them if they had to pay me to shell them.

In my post I state that "grow them, harvest and shell them", I wasn't going to shell them for market, but to sell enough for someone to shell at home for a decent portion, I meant are they worth it? What do you charge for shelling peas?

I fill a quart box with them and charge $2.50. After shelling, the customer gets about a cup of peas. A vendor in my market stopped growing them because he said they didn't sell at a previous market he was going to. Mine have been selling, but the most I have brought at a time were five quarts, so I'm not exactly pushing the market. They are just the overflow from our personal use. I'm thinking about trying another row next year too, strictly for selling. Are they worth it? I think so. It takes just minutes to plant a double row, and it doesn't take long to pick them. As the old hands in the forum tell us, you don't know what sells from market to market until you try. ThinMan

I get $3/lb. If you find they aren't earning their space you can turn them under for green manure.

In the spring I did a small patch for personal use, and put some out for customers to try, fresh out of the pod, telling them I would have a big crop in the fall. Everyone loved them. Your prices are about what I was thinking of charging. So in goes the big crop. Thanks to both of you.

The last ones that I sold, I sold at $4/lb unshelled. I tried selling the shelled ones at $8/lb, but people weren't interested. They got the same amount of edible peas, but it didn't work for me. Be sure to get a 'sweet' tasting pea. I like Green Arrow for me.
