Farmer's Markets

Posted by backyardbelle (My Page) on

I have a garden of my own in my backyard, however, I still love going down to the Farmer's markets on Saturday mornings.

I was curious how big are the gardens of those people who participate in something like a Farmer's Market and how much work has to go into being involved in selling fruits and veggies?

RE: Farmer's Markets

I started with a 25' x 75' garden and maybe grossed $800 (but since I did not keep any records on what we sold I don't know for sure. I am pretty sure we netted no money that year) my first year. The garden was not nearly large enough so the following year increased the size to 1 acre and that was a much better size.

I figure it takes 8 hours of work for each hour I market.

market farming is a lot of work

RE: Farmer's Markets

i grow on about an acre and a half. alot of my space is used to accomodate using my tractor to cultivate so this is by no means an intensive growing of 1 1/2 acres.
it is a lot of work to stay ahead of the weeds and bugs and to irrigate. it is a lot of work to harvest for the market. it is a lot of work to run a stand at the market when you're very busy. but i can't think of a way to earn money thats not a lot of work.
