Has anyone had success with inter planting?

Anybody tried inter-planting on a market garden scale?

I'm considering giving it a try as a way to combat disease pressure. I'm dealing with 3 really nasty diseases this summer (black rot of brassicas, late blight, and powdery mildew of basil).

Of course I'll do crop rotation, and eliminate all the nightshade weeds, and all the other things that are recommended, but I'm thinking it would really slow down the spread of disease, if I didn't have a bed that was a mono-crop.

Anyone tried this already? Any advice on what to combine with basil or kale/cabbage? I'd like the companions to have similar heights and to go in the ground at the same time- I'm thinking early kale with leeks or onions, and basil with peppers or eggplants.

Any advice?
