question for herbgardener?

I noticed in another post that you sell dried oregano. I am just starting out with marketing things from my 'farmlet'. In preparation for retirement I am trying to take baby steps in learning how to package and price stuff - this forum has tons of great ideas.

Back to the oregano - Small containers in the grocery store seem to average between 1/2 and 1 oz. What size package do you sell to your customers?

RE: question for herbgardener?

I sell in large quantities to a restaurant and caterer, so I sell large ziploc freezer bags for $20.00.
I would base my pricing either 50c to 75c less that what is sold in the store. Somehow, people think that they shouldn't have to pay more even though it is a much better than store bought, however, if you are in area where people feel the opposite I would go a little higher.
We use a dehydrator and have it going almost all summer drying the fresh herbs so I have a supply in the winter. We destem the oregano and it makes it so much nicer.
Good luck and and any more questions I will be happy to try and answer.

Thanks so much for the info.
You are so right about people thinking that they should pay less. The farm store where I sell my eggs had a guy complaining about the price of the locally grown heritage chicken. The owner told him that she didn't carry the type of chicken he was looking for - he needed to go across the street to the grocery store for that :-).

At the moment people who shop there are willing to pay just slightly more for food but I think that is changing and more people in this are realizing what it takes to produce quality food.

Again, thanks for the info - and I probably will look you up as I get more involved.

Was a Mediterrean deli type store today and they were selling 1/4lb oregano for $4.00. So a lb. could easily sell for $15.00.
Take care and by all means stay in touch.
