How to set up a display table? Containers for tomatoes?

Posted by Quirkpod 7 Lewisville NC (My Page) on

Can anyone advise me of any simple ways I can display my wares here at my home roadside stand? I already have a table I built, 20 inches by 60 inches tabletop, with shelf below. I am willing to build a series of boxes with handles, but I suppose I could use baskets. I want to save money, naturally. Any low-cost container ideas for carrying the Toms to and from the stand? Thanks.

We built boxes with wood we had salvaged and planed it down. They look very nice. At the table we use a basket. The problem is a bushel of tomatoes does not stay nice in a basket. So we built an insert for the basket that we can put ice packs in to, but it lets the toms be only 2 or 3 deep. Keeps people from reaching in and bruising them.

We use bread trays to carry and display tomatoes. We usually have a piece of cardboard on the bottom of the tray so the tomatoes are not brused as easily. we prop the trays up on one side so the tray is facing the customer.
With the fragle heirlooms stacking on top of each other in a basket is not a good idea. The bread trays can stack without crushing tomatoes

Garlic Lady..I'm thrilled to find some else using this type of things. Recently(last year) I got my hand on several dozen bread trays. I love these for display purposes. I find that they are easy to clean, a great size (mine are about 21" by 28") and light weight for hauling purposes. I also use the plastic stackable bins. I feel that the plastic products are the easiest to keep CLEAN. I don't care for the wooden crates only because they stain too easily. HEIDI

For transportation, I would advise you to purchase at least one of the garden carts you can get at Sam's Club in the spring. They are sturdy enough you can put things down in them that are flat, then put a piece of plywood or similar across the top and stack additional items. The carts are extremely durable and have "all-terrain" type wheels. They have become invaluable both in the garden while picking as well as transportation around the farm.
