Does anyone know of a more active forum/website to discuss issues with others who are into farmers markets? Thanks!

I signed up on local harvest just last week! It isn't very active, so I've been reading past posts. It seems like there is so much that we could learn from one another, but not many forums are active. Oh well. I have Mother Earth News to read, Eliot Coleman's books, Eric L. Gibson's book on farmers markets, Growing For Market, and a couple of websites. I'm designing signs and making up flyers for the types of produce I'll have, printing off nutrition labels, etc. to help educate the consumer. We're also going to be making our own rain barrels!

The problem with this forum is that they don't notify you if someone posts unless you started the thread. It would be nice if we could keep some conversations going.

jpc57 - Sounds like you're doing all the things "I'll get to... sometime!"

I bookmarked the local harvest forum page and check it every day but if there isn't much action after a while, I usually forget to check. I lke hearing what others are doing, what they've learned.

It would be nice to have a more active forum. I use gardenweb, daves, GFM and local harvest. Also I watch the local extension service and university for any small farm conferences. Ours is Feb 20 - 22.

Right now I am in the middle of getting seed ordered, wreath making, studying better irrigation techinques, getting some boxes ready for bees (my newest project), trying to put together a CSA (20 week Flower, Herb, Veggie and Wreaths) and dreaming of Spring.

I am growing 1 and 1/2 acres of flowers, 1/2 acre of herbs, 2 and 1/2 acres of veggies, and 1 acre of Christmas greens. That should be enough this year.

Good luck growing..

Bryan

Bryan, you mentioned GFM. Is that Growing For Market? I subscribe to their newsletter, but I didn't know they had a forum. I looked at the website but didn't see a link for a forum, am I missing something or do I have the wrong GFM?! Speaking of GFM, I don't know if I'll renew my subscription or not. I think I expected more along the lines of the basics, rather than news from around the world on organics: are they better for you, detecting organic fraud, and stuff like that. I'm reading Eric Gibson's book on farmers' markets and that is answering all of my questions as well as answering questions before I thought of them!

I would have thought a lot more of forums as well as this one would be more active at this time of year too. Maybe after Christmas or New Year.

Right now I'm plotting out more space to till up,making diagrams of the layouts, keeping the compost pile going, turning and cooking, making list of new varieties of veggies I might would like to try next year and making list of seeds I need for cutting flowers.Since I'm a newbee at farmers market,I assessing what I did this year and how I can improve next year.

Things I do need for next year: a journel for seeds sewn so I can keep up with dates sewn and maturity dates.I also need to map my crops out,'cause I lost a lot of labels this passed year and I'm not educated enough, yet,to tell on melon(tomato, pepper)from the other if I don't have labels.Better signage, more appealing veggie displays for my booth, better way to display my cut flowers and since I'm doing more potted host and nector plants for buttrtflies and caterpillars,I will need more and better pass out info sheets.

There were several ladies there with packaged herbs so I need to come up with an exciting way to present mine next year so I stand out from the crowd.Or maybe I should just stick with potted herbs.

We can't sell baked goods at our FM but we are allowed to bring baked goods for sampling. I made squash and green tomato pies for sampling this passed market that help sell more squash and tomatoes for me and the other venders so I'll need to plan more for this coming season and have more recipes printed and ready.

I'm sure I'll come up with more things I need to do.
