Has anyone formed a MG Society?

Our club formed a MG society many years ago. We are associated with the school we graduated from. Our goal is to assist our school liason, in return we are provided with a meeting place and are covered by their insurance. We are not for profit but have had plant sales to provide money for our trips and speakers. Things are getting a little touchy between the Society and the school. They feel we should not be having plant sales but should use our dues. Our dues will not provide enough money to do this. We have also given money from our plant sales to the school and have donated some to various organizations. Have any of you had this problem and how have you handled it? It seems that they are trying to dismantle our Society and we really do ot want this to happen! Lynne

Is this a group connected with the Extention service? It sounds like a separate organization. The school system may have rules and requirements that your group doesn't meet. Sandy

So? All you need is a new meeting place and you can sitll be a Master Gardener Society or club and you can tell the school to (well, you know). Surely you can find a facility somewhere that will let you meet once amonth. a library, a government building, a nursery, a church or something. Maybe next time you should draft a letter of intent by both parties stating what you can and can't do and what is expected. By the way, if you decide to strike out on your own and the school has a change of heart, I would think long and hard before I changed my mind and relented. I would think with your free assistance being offered now and the monetary donations, they need you more than you need them.

We had a group, not a certified 401C3 nonprofit, but we had bylaws, paid dues, had meetings and speakers. Then the new agent decided to start having meetings (naturally at the same day/time as ours) so our group disbanned. We had a problem w/ annoying MGs who thought the $15 in dues was unacceptable, but at every meeting I saw them there at, they would make announcements for other groups that they belonged to having $50 per person dinners, etc. Michelle
