What can I do w/Espoma Super Phosphate & Bone Meal?

Hi All-
I remember reading about phosphate on a thread last year but don't remember what and how to use it. I have peonies, clematis, rhodies, New Dawn Climber, 2 Fairies, 3 Nikko Blue hydrangeas, 1 PG hydrangea, a couple of hollies, lilacs and hostas. I have bone meal and phosphate to apply; what would benefit from either and how much and when to apply. I am beginning to think I haven't a gardening bone in my body. I love the beautiful flowers but don't have a clue as to the constant care of them. I have 1 rhodie that as a foundation planting that is going into its 3rd spring and it hasn't set buds. I know my plants are hungry. Please any suggestions would be so appreciated.

Thanks,
suebot in CT

RE: What can I do w/Espoma Super Phosphate & Bone Meal?

Bone meal and phosphate are the same nutrient, they both supply phosphorus.

Plants require three main nutrients, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K); fertilizers are labelled with their nutrient ratio in the order N-P-K. Fertilizer with a label that says 18-6-4 contains 18%N, 6%P, 4%K.

Nitrogen supports leaves and stems, phosphorus supports roots. Newly planted shrubs benefit from some phosphorus as they will need to rapidly grow roots but most older plants need more nitrogen than phosphorus.

Before using any fertilizer you should test your soil as too much fertilizer is just as damaging as not enough.
