Willow suckers/cuttings; follow-up

THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP POSTING ON THE RESULTS OF MY PLANTING WILLOW SUCKER CUTTINGS.

1. Although some of the suckers did root many did not.

2. Of the willow cuttings from branches most did root.
Field mice ringing the base of the cuttings was the main
cause for failure in the cuttings, although the branch cuttings held up best to the field mice, leafing out regardless.

My conclusion is although willow suckers will root they are not as strong as the branch cuttings of the same size. They seem to dry up, contain more water and are less dense then a branch.

if you are willow expert, would you tell me...

what is the best time to trim a willow tree? I have a lot of long branches brushing the grass and it makes it kind of hard to mow. And how it is better to trim it anyway? I have a lot of them suckers growing right from the trunk of the tree. Should I cut them off? And when? Any advice is appriciated.

Brew some of those Willow tree cutting like tea. It will create a wonderful root hormone, after rooting some plants with the tea, then water your plants with leftover tea, because it doesb't really keep. I leaned that in Masdter Gardening & it really works. I have a draw full of wild Willows that need trimming constantly.
