Horizontal vs. vertical leaves?

I was reading about horizontal and vertical leaves, but I must admit I've never heard of this before. It seems to me most plants, like roses for example, would have horizontal leaves. What would have vertical leaves? Some cactus? Grass?

I thought maybe the MG curriculum covered these terms as far as describing leaves.

Me neither. It's not really a useful distinction as far as I can tell. What would you use it for?

Where did you read this and what was the context?
