Hello everyone. My name is Carolyn. I live in North Florida and I am a Pet Groomer. I have been collecting plants here and there for several years.. I love starting clippings and seeds. I have decided that I am going to take the MG course that is being given by our local Ext. Classes start in two weeks..Is there anything that I shoud be aware of when going into this class? We have to have 75 hours in the first year of Cert. and then 35 hours the years after. Which I hope to put in more then that. Thank you for any information..

Some of the subjects will not be your special interest, but they are important so work hard to understand those that may be boring to you. Take every opportunity for advanced training that is offered, it may never be offered again. Keep up with your paper work and file all your class notes where you can find them, as you WILL need them later. Al

Remember that becoming a Master Gardener does not make you a master at gardening, but a master at finding answers to gardening questions. The course simply cannot cover enough material to teach you everything you may think you need to know, but it will give you a basic knowledge in many areas of horticulture. From that you will delve more deeply into specific topics as need arises during your volunteer work. And once you've started to volunteer, never be afraid to say, "I don't know the answer to that question but I'll find an answer and get back to you." And then do the research and get back to the client. The fact that a Master Gardener did that for a question I asked many years ago was one of the reasons I decided to take the course. He cared enough to get an answer for me to a very unusual question. Good luck with the course and happy volunteering! Sandy

Congratulations for deciding to take this class. I am in Mobile and took our classes in 2005 - it was the best thing I ever did for myself. It will help you to decide in what area you are most interested and you will meet some marvelous people. Our group has been to the Pensacola area for bus trips and they have a great program there. All of the comments above are so appropriate. Again, congratulations and welcome to the program.

Welcome to a great club - Florida Master Gardeners ! The biggest complaint in my Class of 2008 was that the MG course was not at all what people had expected ( too scientific and too hard ) and they had no idea they would have to volunteer later . They just wanted to learn to grow pretty flowers in their HOA perfect little manicured yards . I have a science degree and soaked up as much as I could and continue to do so . I love being a MG ! Utilize the University of Florida website - solutionsforyourlife.com as often as possible . Go there every day and read as much as you can - it will help prepare you for class . We have fantastic opportunities for free and small fee CEUs . Take advantage of as many as you can . I will soon be attending my second Conference . Go next year if you can - well worth the $$$ . And most of all - smile and laugh frequently . It really isn't all THAT serious !! |
