Most taking the course are gardeners that would like to be better gardeners. Saturday I visited a classmate of 10 years ago who has founded her own garden design company. She put a prize winning display in the San Francisco garden show and is doing quite well. When she took the class she was working for a nursery already and so one thing leads to another. Many MGs spend many happy hours working on projects approved by their extension office. Some of these have no garden of their own because of being apartment dwellers with no land to work. I think that the outreach and volunteer hours you put in as a part of the program put you in contact with a lot of people who are very involved in garden related activities.
Combined with the knowledge and experience you gain as you go along, I think it's natural that you will be more likely to run into job opportunities as a result, whether you are looking for them or not.

I'm not looking, but I would love to get involved in something down the road that I enjoy doing and could earn a few dollars at to support my habit as well.

The MG training program is not nearly enough to take you from novice to pro. But it is a great learning experience. And staying in tough with other MGs after training is an ongoing source of information. But it is not intended to be job training.
