Interesting topic from Iowa MG Coordinator

I am posting a section from the weekly email update that is sent to all Iowa Master Gardeners by James Romer, our state coordinator.

*********************

HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?

Has your local Master Gardener group been asked to give some advice,

suggestions, design and planning of a community landscaping project.

Being active gardeners and community supporters, they enthusiastically

jump on the opportunity. During discovery discussions, it is made

clear verbally, that the Master Gardeners are here for education, and

planning ideas, and yes, maybe some planting --But NOT on-going

maintenance and care for the project. When it comes to actual planting

and implementing, again, being the enthusiastic, roll-up-the-sleeve

and let's do it type of people, the Master Gardeners help prepare the

bed and help install the plants -- with another verbal understanding

again that the ongoing project is not the MGs, and that no maintenance

will be given. And -- you guessed it, the verbal words are not

remembered clearly, no matter how many times they are stated. Has

anyone out there developed a written agreement, form or contract that

spells out where Master Gardener help begins and ends? Advice? If so,

please send them to jromer@iastate.edu. Thanks to Craig Hertel, for

this discussion topic.

Is your Master Gardener group primarily functioning in an educational capacity? Or, is your group just a convienient pool of slave laborers?
