Forums or e-bulletin boards

I'd like to create an on-line forum for use by our Master Gardener group for communication within the group, and I was wondering if any other counties had anything similar set up. I'm meeting with our Extension Agent to outline my ideas and hopefully get permission to proceed, and I thought maybe if some other groups would be willing to share their sites or experiences it might help me plead my cause.

RE: Forums or e-bulletin boards

Have you looked into the free group/forum/message board options, i.e. Yahoo groups?
You've inspired me to take up this issue with our agent. I'm considering hosting a Yahoo group for my unit, with agent approval of course.

RE: Forums or e-bulletin boards

Our MGs use one of the free forum message boards (which garden web says I can't name here!) and it works well. Our biggest problem is lack of interest by the MGs. Postings are few and far between and generate very few replies. I'm not sure why.

RE: Forums or e-bulletin boards

Hi Sandy,
My MG unit struggles will all things computer. A fellow MG uses the term "technological dinosaurs". Many of them also have issues with answering machines/services yet b-tch and moan how "no tells me anything" or " I never know what's going on" and, my personal favorite, "no one called me to let me know". Engraved invitation anyone?
Quite a few of us are computer savvy but too many aren't. Trying to communicate is often like driving on a flat and I can't think of a way to remedy the situation. You can't force people to get online, or even an answering machine, but you can't spend all day trying to contact them. Unfortunately I'm of the opinion that if they wanted to be involved or be reachable they'd make an effort. At least get an answering machine. I don't mind leaving messages but I don't volunteer as a MG to be stuck on the phone. And if they don't have a way for folks to contact them, then quit complaining.
I'll get off my soapbox now.
