I am within 10 miles of Damariscotta and also along the coast. I have had a s. japonicus growing for 5 winters now with no problems except for very sparse bloom last spring. I attribute this to buds being damaged by cold. This winter has been even colder than last, but deep snow cover should, I hope, have mitigated damage to many plants, styrax included. While usually listed as hardy in Z5, I think this is pretty optimistic. I do think what you propose is well worth doing. A return to the mild winters we experienced prior to 13-14 and 14-15 and there should be no problem. Even occasional subzero cold will be tolerated well, especially in a place protected from winter wind.

Thanks for your response akamainegrower. The plants are all in pots in a cold dark room. So far remain totally dormant. Before your response I called the Coastal botanic garden in Boothbay and they were very helpful. I went to a map of their gardens and saw the five specimens in the photo! My husband and I have been produce growers forever so when we moved to Maine we began again, mostly as a way to meet new folks.
