Trenching 101

I prefer to have a shallow channel dug out of the grass around my flower beds for a neat look and to keep flowers safe from the mower. Do I dig the side by the flower bed straight down and then dig at a slant on the side in the grass - or is it just the opposite? Thanks for your help.

Opposite. The vertical face helps prevent the grass from spreading into the bed via roots. A diagonal face would channel them down and under the trench into the bed.

But of course! Many thanks for clarifying, Dan.
