I am reading a biography of Sarah Orne Jewett, who lived in South Berwick. There is a reference to Lafayette visiting S. Berwick and walking up a box-bordered path to the front door. Does boxwood really survive in Maine through the winter--or any number of winters? Anyone have any experience growing box in Maine?

There is plenty of it growing in hedges in my town. I'm not sure what the variety is, though. The ones I see are long-established and appear to have been growing a long time.

Box is hardy at least to the southern edge of Zone 4. Note: If your Box dies back in the Spring, do not lose hope. Simply prune off all the smaller branches. Leave the main stem. New growth will appear by mid-summer and be 2' tall by Fall. I removed several Box plants that I thought were dead but they weren't. Don't make the same mistake I did.
