| Boy, you would have thought I would have reported in before now! Always the procrastinator. Nancy checking in from York in So. Maine. Have a wonderful 100 year old home we are renovating. Love to garden but last year didn't feel like doing to much with them. (Saddened by all the loss in the garden from no snow cover)This gardening year will be better! Our town triples in population during the summer, so we locals try to get out early and get our errands done quickly. Glad to see tourists come in the summer and glad to see them go. We need a rest and calm for at least a few months after the summer. NOT a fan of extending the season as our local chamber tries so hard to do. Loving all the snow we have been getting this season. Looking forward to a great summer too. Take care all, NancyLouise |

| I know how you feel darlin'! I lived on MDI for a while and boy did I hate the littering and rudeness of some of the tourists! |

| Hi from Dave in Portland. Been a cold snowy winter here, going to get another 6-10 inches tomorrow, Monday. Can't wait for the "warm" weather to get here. Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth, planted albizia julibrissin, 'rosea' and it seems to be surviving just fine here; temps this winter in the yard have been about -14 a couple of times. Do you think the tree will make it? I cut off about an inch of the top branch (it's about 5 feet tall) and it's nice and green-looking. Take care. |

OMG I lost my post.... So I might be repeating ... Snow, snow and more snow! Their saying could get 2 ft. starting tonite right on til Sunday Morning! I HATE SNOW! On the bright side... started some seed planting yesterday and doing some more today! Has anyone else started any thing? If so what? Be Safe All... Sky |
RE: Roll Call ...All Maineiacs please report in...part two
| | |
| I agree with you about snow, Sky. YUCK! I have petunias just coming up under lights, and my begonia tubers are starting to poke out shoots after being potted up about a month ago. I've got pansies planted, but I THINK it's the petunias that are making their first appearance. My blasted cat pulled the labels out of the flats. :-) Best, Nina in Sidney |
RE: Roll Call ...All Maineiacs please report in...part two
| | |
| LOL am sorry Nina... Last year was my first attempt at seed growing, I am so hooked now! Let's see; my first mistake was thinking I would remember which seeds I planted until I could find my marker, wrong I couldn't, second was using wood makrers. They ran and I couldn't read! I said Ok Ok I got this down now, marked as I planted, used plastic, am on a roll, carefully picked up my tray of 70 just planted seeds, and I tripped over my dang cat, every thing went crashing! A normal person would have given up by now am sure. But I didn't all in all things turned out great! Wow you have things up already! I've been trying to hold myself back! Am green with envy! Be safe all! Sky |

| I just got back from 3 weeks in Arizona, it rain 3/4 of the time, and then the last week it was lots of sun and 80 degree days, they are in full Spring right now. After coming back hereand seeing all this snow the only cheerful thing I can do is start sowing seeds and pray that my garlic beds dont rot this spring from too much moisture in the ground. I bought a case of wine form a winery in Arizona,if it keeps snowing there may not be any left for this Summer to enjoy! My favorite is this one called Desert Dust. Anyway welcome all, hopefully we can have a Maine Meeting somewhere this Summer, a trade or swap would be great. Regardless, it is great to have a connection to other gardeners in the state of Maine who enjoy discussing garden related topics. Cheers all...I think its time to hit the dust now. :) |

| I saw lots of snow fleas the last few days....any one else notice them? I think last nights snow may have covered them a few inches....wondering if they became compost or not? ( trying to entertain myself and make the best of all this snow...cant start sowing until I get back from a road trip that should last till the end of the month... ...what about my corn, tomatoes, eggplant, sniff sniff...sniff and my snaps????oh dear.... |

Hi, there. Hope I qualify as a Maineiac. We moved to Falmouth last year from New Orleans and LOVE it. However, I have to say gardening's a bit different here. It's a shock moving from a 12 month growing season (we didn't have a single frost last year) and rich brown soil where anything you put in it will grow. We do love having real seasons, though, and it's just so beautiful here! Winter is seeming a bit long, however--I'd love to lose the snow in my yard. :-) To get a jump start on spring, I tried planting seeds for the first time, and lots are poking up. Hope I can keep them happy long enough to get them in the ground! Sometime next month, I hope? Andrea |

| Another voice from York... Cape Neddick. (Hi NancyLouise!). Our yard is littered with the many sticks/toys our young dog collects... it would be suicide to try to push a mower right now, even if it WAS reasonable... :) . I'm freaked out by the scope of the clean up, but the sight of croci and Aconitum up nearly 2" bolsters my confidence and fuels my zeal. I'm SO over winter. |

| Hi from Durham. Just found Garden Web and still not sure how to get around in it yet. I live on 3.8 acres on a farm built in the 1820's. I have been here since 1969 and worked in Perennial places around here but after the bad winter last year started seriously trying to identify the old plants found here since we moved here. I have started day lilies to replace my irises that take years to bloom and found out I am addicted. Need some help figuring out how to take pictures the proper size to upload. My camera goes as small as 1.8 pix or about 220 kb. Anyone know how to make small pics? Thanks for any help. |
RE: Roll Call ...All Maineiacs please report in...part two
| | |
| I just send my photos to photobucket.com its free and it works for me. If you go to computer forum here at Gardenweb they can give you other ideas and step by step instructions....they are so nice its difficult to imagine that such a topic of a forum would be so helpful and busy. It was very active when I was last visiting there. There are also ways to better change typography and use graphics which may be a blinker or such. That is when a drawings or cartoon may be flashing in the post...I cant figure that one out but pagancat would be the person to ask about that...but there are others out there that always surprise me with their computer techo and seems to bring more character. I am searching for what equpment to do short animations with or 30 sec clips would be great. Ideal would be 1.5 minutes and have easy access to each frame for my cartoon editing to do in something similar to Photoshop. I would also like to be able to insert slides. It seems the people I ask about this would not be experienced enough in that specific of a request as one who has actual gone through the process. I want to make a childrens film interactive homeschooling tool that basicly would explain to a curious mind with no experience in composting and growing for a family for 1 years worth of garden food. a how to do organic gardening. I am hoping that it makes me rich and well known. If it fails then I feel my purpose must change too, and if I cant get organic to be known as the most wholesome then I'll write a book on what scraps I can find and make it work for myself. I would also be interested if a round robin which compost was traded with in a certain area...nearby townships?! Say, I trade one yard by getting 12 yards all at once. But each month I would have to transport to that persons home 1 yeard of organic compost for 12 months until each of the 12 contributing members recieved their 12 yards of compost. Say only 4 people signed up. Then the round robin would begin with hopes to bring a closure with in a specific agreed amount of time. Compost could be complete but any form of compost otherwise would be by agreement from the reciever only. If you could not fillfill the agreement each month, then group should agree to have one day where truck loads are mixed and redistributed. Eavery one shares all costs of mixing. Location would change each month to where the mixer would be. Thre is to be no profit and no businesses can be mentioned or any other propaganda sponserships. Annp could be our compost inspector and perhaps some brave could invite her as a royal honoree to attend our mixes . It should also be agreed that all those in the mixer would agree that the soils which they were going to mix with would be in the favor of what they would like to be. Perhaps payment of compost would be to pay everything with compost, so bring a little extra for payment, you should be able to take back the same amount, less fees for contra dance and fee to gather and share. AND most importantly contributions of the group are exclusive of the 12 traders, and once the trading begins then the mixer can not change- traded but never changed. Each trader has the right not to participate any any time and to rejoin at any time during the 12 month commitment. Ideally each person involved would get compost from all over but would still be of ones indigenous area. I think it will be great for getting plants proper information from what ones area has responded to be more hardy in. Also if this doesnt work because what ever then maybe I should bother my local weeekly newspaper in the classified section and see what kind of response I would get. So this type of compost sharing for organic and immediate usage in gardens would be called a "garden compost mixer" Maximum 12 minimum of 1. I can provide a space for a mixer and donate all of my compost to the Southwest Library. If There is enough compost I can put in a veggie bed in the backyard or walking courtyard. THis is a donated project which I was asked to do for this year after foolishly suggesting how nice it would look...ok so the first mixer... I will get back with a date but it should be during the month of June and the earlier the better. First Saturday in June perhaps? I'll wait to hear if anyone would like to have it on a different date. SO the soil is to be mixed at the storage yard of AC Parsons. AC Parsons will agree to usage of space (unless the library will agree to holding the mixer in the proposed court yard). So place of Mixer will be with in Southwest Harbor Maine or West Tremont Maine. You bring 2 yards of compost take back with you 1 yard as part of the investment of the traders. The traders would each month meet and exchange compost. this should be actually done during the growing season and off season, time. If only 2 want to do this then each would take turns bringing 1 yard of compost minimum and maximum to the others place with in the same area. So my invite is for all those living within Mount Desert Island to have a compost mixer the first Saturday in June. All compost trade for this project will be donated to the SOuthwest Public Library in Southwest Harbor Maine. This will be limited to the first 12 qualified by annp if she is so willing to judge the ocmpost and the trade will be simply agreeing to mix your compost will all present and then take back with you what you brought. Compost must be approved by all traders in the mix at the time before the mix begins. Hand shoveling only on tarps to mix. Bring your own containers to take home in. I guess I need to renew my garden club dues so I can hit them on this with a clean conscience! Cheers- Sue |

| There was a lovely iris society page that had how to take pictures of irises. In the process of reading this I discovered the photographer had photo shop elements I think it was called to downsize the pictures. Well last year I actually bought the program for another feature for I do geanology scanning of pictures and some repair work for the family. It has this feature in it and I learned something new. I love the digi age but am new at it. I was a photographer of the old school until this month. I can't wait to try photographing garden stuff with this digi thing. Anyway, thanks for it was this forum that helped me find the right help. |

| Greetings from Saco! I just found the forum.......how nice it is to hear garden talk! I started spring clean up as soon as my snow melted....now is the time to pull any weeds that wintered over. Their roots are weakened and the ground is moist. Can't believe how many I had. It's just nice to be out in the garden, imagining all the green that will soon surround us. Deb |

| Chelone, Hey there neighbor! Just came in for a break from yard clean up. We went to Cliff House for brunch this morning as a treat for the family so now it's back to work. Started it yesterday (had the kids help me)now it's just me. But that's okay, raking and pulling weeds are good alone jobs to do. I think about things and sing to myself...sometimes out loud as long as the kids don't hear me. They'll go screaming into the house yelling "Make her stop! Make her stop!" Hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful Sunday in your garden. NancyLouise |

| Hi from West Baldwin! Anyone else in the area? I'm a Maineiac transplant up from NH and absolutely loving it! Would love to have a get together for the south Maine area if possible. My garden is very new without much in it, we just moved here last May and the previous owners didn't do much with it. Planted some Hydrangeas last year but not much else, we were remodeling and decorating the new homestead, but I can't wait to get into it this year. Any ideas on the best nurseries in the area, will go just about anywhere for the best buys! Happy Gardening All! |

I'll start cucumbers today, love the temperature modification that hoophouse provides, plus getting out of the wind, which is constant around here. Happy Spring! |

| lilyroseviolet: I'm interested in some sort of compost exchange, it's a terrific idea for diversity and also learning what others do, but probably not this year! We've moved back home with my mom and have major rennovations going this summer. I've turned my dad's veggie garden (dormant for three years) into a huge compost pile, but it's going to be covered with yards of dirt rather than be tended. Should have some great compost next spring :) neesie: I'm in southern ME also. I'm not going to have much time this year, but a get together would be a lot of fun. One of my favorite nurseries isn't far from you. O'Donnel's is in Westbrook ( I think... it's on Rt 114 where Westbrook, Scarborough and Gorham meet, so not sure which town they're actually in!). Broadway Gardens in South Portland is also very good, but a bit more of a hike for you. If you're at the Maine Mall, though, it's not far from there. Kat |

| I'm embarrassed to say I'm logging on to Garden Web for the first time since last fall. I was doing the "winter things" - ice fishing, snowmobiling, etc - trying not to think about spring too soon. But at night, when I went to sleep, I said the alphabet of flowers in my head - "A Azalea, B Buttercup, C Crocus, D Daffodil...." I'm always with my flowers somehow... And now that spring is finally here, my life is really back. Durham checking in. |

| Hi from North Yarmouth. I spent the first 6 weeks of this year winter sowing 350 containers of seeds.I had half of them out on the front porch and the other half out back on a rack. All of the snow didn't even phase them. I had about 75% germination. Now I've been planting and am I ever sore! |

Hi, we built a house in Kennebunk almost 8 years ago. I dug out mountains of sand and clay, replaced them with mountains of loam. Planted shrubs, trees, bulbs, perennieals, annuals, tried many things, been happy some years, disgusted in others, but so it goes. This year so far so good, except for my daffodils. I've also designed and built a few dollhouses in the past couple years. I like to add some gardens there too. |

Hi kennebunker and maureen. Welcome to the Maine Forum. When spike first opened this forum, his intro last year was something about how are the tomatoes in regards to our weather. This year my tomatoes are still quite small and no blooms yet, hope everyone else is having better sucess. I would love to see pictures of your garden maureen. Its always fun to see what others have created. Not sure what you mean kennebunker about adding gardens to where you have the doll houses? Sorry, I didnt quite get that. How large are the doll houses? What type of gardens are you planning for? |

Thank you for the welcome Lilyrosviollet. The garden not looking good this year. moving things around and busy painting house and all the rain slowing everything down. I will try a picture of the front. Please keep in mind under the trees nothing grows well. this time last year. all was still dirt. in spring things were blooming. now things just falling over from rain. also no money to spend. all in all not bad for no money. I am still trying to identify things. I have lots of ladies mantel??? think that’s what its called. It seams like everything in yard it tall and needs staking or ground creeping taking everything over. I need to arrange things more but have problems with the ground. Cant dig the smallest whole. Think time to do raised beds. Just more work no time for. Opps 8 am time to move out side now, before work at 2pm. more another time.... |

Hi from Joyce in Lewiston. I am new to this forum. Just moved to the city from N Monmouth. There is just my husband & I. We found a nice apt. with a large yard & the landlord said I could till up as much as I wanted, less for him to mow! I have a 20'x 25' plot divided into 4 sections. Everything looks great. I have 1 Early Girl tomato plant , 1 Big Boy tomato plant, 6 cukes with lots of little baby cukes,4 dill plants 1 green pepper with a lot of leaves, 3 large basil plants, 4 small head lettuces, 2 pumpkins, only 1 that has any fruit set and lots of flowers around them. A friend also gave me a pair of plastic pink flamingos which I gave a nice spot at the back of the garden. I also dug up a little near the road & planted sunflowers & zinnias which are growing very well. The plants seem to love this heat! I am glad we have an air conditioner in our tiny 3rd floor apt!! |

| Did someone say morning glories? :-) Since I'm at home today - gotta take cats to the vet for shots - I got to see "Grandpa Ott" and "Scarlet O'Hara" open, for a change. They've been blooming for a few days now, but I've only seen first the buds and then the spent flowers because of my work schedule. I had such a time getting these beauties to grow for me this year! Cold and wet conditions made it really difficult for them to get their feet down. It's worth the replanting I had to do to see them crawling up the mailbox post and around the deck rails now, though. I went nuts and planted every variety (except the dwarf ones) I could get my hands on locally. So more colors will be coming along soon. |
RE: Roll Call ...All Maineiacs please report in...part two
| | |
| Hey veilchen!! Thanks for the welcome. So did you have problems with the slugs this year? They were terrible in our area. I unfortunatly had to resort to slug bait to get ahead of them. Ugh!! Hope your garden is doing well. Why, yes, someone did say morning glories!! I absolutly love them and plant them every year. We have them from the ground, to the porch railing, on their way to the roof of the house. Two more flowers today!! |
RE: Roll Call ...All Maineiacs please report in...part two
| | |
| Slugs are not terrible in my garden, the damage I get seems to be from the baby slugs and baby snails (new to my garden since 2 yrs ago). When I start seeing too many holes, I sprinkle the Escar-go and it seems to keep them in check for a while. |

| lilyroseviolet, Sorry to respond so late - Been hanging out in the tractor forum... My secret to our pumpkin success is doing self pollenation. My son and I tie up the female flowers at night. The next morning we take a male flower off the vine and open up the females and rub the pollen from the male into the female. We then tie up the females again and wait for the magic to happen. We obviously till in a lot of manure in the fall and spring and keep the soil watered well. The pumpkin patch gets larger each year as my son gets older! MaineDad |

| Robin those moose pictures are totally awesome! What a rare treat to have been able to see them so close and in their natural habitat! Indicanoe, trncclure, joyce and roserock welcome welcome...do tell us how you got your name?! :) MaineDad, thank you for the secret...errr how do you tell a male from a female as I thought pumpkins all were both. I understand that tying up pumpkins is best at night so as not to disturb or find any bees to confront with. ouch that would not be good. Sounds like a wonderful childrens picture story. How old is your son now? Perhaps your son should write the book and illustrate it, get rich and keep his dad and mom home to garden with full time. :) |

Hi! I'm not quite in Maine yet but will be in about a week and a half and am getting impatient (though sad to leave my plants in MD - the one bed i started from scratch just finally got almost good this year. oh well). Will be in Trenton. Not much of any garden there now; will look forward to seeing what wildflowers, etc. may be lurking in the woods, and any other hidden treasures. Have loved the Mid-Atlantic forum and our swaps (to which I owe much of my garden - both for the plants received and for the opportunity to make room by passing along the things i had too many of!) - looking forward to meeting GardenWeb people in Maine! -libby |

| No, not gardening in Maine, but in California. But I grew up on stories of Maine, my grandmother's home state; does anyone know the town of Prentiss north of Bangor? Anyway, while visiting my great-aunt Blanche many years ago in midsummer, I fell in love with her wonderful flower garden, a simple garden but a place of great beauty. I determined then and there that someday I too would have a garden full of flowers and every kind of loveliness. Well, 3000 miles away and 30 years later I do, and I think of that long-ago garden in Maine every year. |

| I cannot believe I have not responded to this before. I have not been spending much time on the web but I have been spending plenty of time in the dirt. I live in Hollis but am moving to Saco. The hardest part of the move is moving my plants. Fall is the best time but it sure keep me busy. I am amazed at the people from Maine on the site now. Welcome to all. Hope you are enjoying it. |

| I have been reading the Garden Forums for two years now and only finally registered as a member today. I am in Saco and spend every weekend in my veggie or flower gardens or in the kitchen canning the results. The Maine Gardening Forum isn't used very much by my fellow Mainers but I still look regularly at this forum and several others. Maybe I will add to it occasionally now that I have "found my voice." |

Hello - I now live in Florida and after 25 years, Maine gardening is finally fading into Florida gardening. We lived in and absolutely loved New Gloucester and had a wonderful garden. ... moose, racoons, birds everywhere, including a flock of bluebirds.. old deep woods.. For years my heart ached for Maine. Finding this forum was a wonderful trip down memory lane and such a pleasure to hear the names of the little towns surrounding New Gloucester. We 'tamed' the elements with lots of help from Organic garding and Mother Earth News. The best to all of you.. and thanks for the memories Linda Florida |

| Hello from South Gardiner. |

| Hi. I'm Dan. I have a small farm in Brooksville (Blue Hill Peninsula). I spent the day picking up more seaweed off the Deer Isle causeway beach in the rain. If this keeps up I'm going to get the whole garden (nearly 3 acres) mulched. More likely we'll eventually get enough snow that I can't get in there. |

welcome everyone. Dan you must be close to Eliot Colemans place?! I am from MDI and understand the seaweed collecting and the snow problem...good for you anyways that you are able to get your gardens done up with seaweed. My father-in-law calls it rock weed. I still have much to collect myself....Its that hill from the rocky beach that is the most work for me.lol |

| Eliot, although he seems to commonly refer to his home as either "Harborside" or "Blue Hill", does live in Brooksville. (I suspect he's being cagey to preserve what privacy he may have left.) That said, he lives out on Cape Rosier, on the far end of town from me, where I rarely have business going. Our paths cross once or twice a year. I have much more contact with those who have less public lives to hide from. At the farmer's Solstice party, there were representatives from Wind & Sun (that's me), Stoneset, King Hill, Horsepower, and of course Old Ackley Farm, as they hosted the event. Others I might commonly see are those of Carding Brook Farm and Five Star Nursery. Denizens of Four Season Farm are rarely seen. Rock weed is the common name for a species of seaweed. Most of what I collect is rock weed. Every now and then I'll get a little kelp or some other specie. Doesn't MDI have any beaches where you can drive right up to it? It was more work in the rain yesterday because the sand wasn't frozen. When I was there last week it was great. I brought the garden cart and could get it from anywhere I wanted, and it's more or less a level path to the truck. Last week I chose to take it from a spot where the waves had heaped it up some, but also washed all the sand down so I got more green matter for my effort. When it's frozen, seaweed isn't so slimy either. Also, when I get the load home I jack the trailer tongue off the truck (2wd Tacoma), pick it up with the small tractor, and haul it off to the garden where I spread by hand. Then I bring the trailer back, fork the load from the truck into the trailer, and go spread that. So it's easier to get around in the garden when the ground is frozen too. I'd like to get more crab shell too, but I've mostly cleaned out my source, at least so there isn't enough to make a truck and trailer load in one shot possible. I started looking for more sources. At the first place I stopped, the guy looked at me and said, "Do you know a guy named Colman? He stops and picks up all our shells every day." Dan |

| Ive only been to colemans's place 3 times, but relatively speaking I meant you were out by him. I would love to know more about those farmer gatherings...would the blue hill coop be a good source to find future dates?! The beach where I collect seaweed is across the street from my and on my inlaws private beach...I can drive up to the beach but the beach itself is very rocky and steep. SOmetimes I bring a large garden cart and haul my small treasures home up the big hill. I think of it as a good workout. :) However, nearing 50 I think I'll check out some other sites, thanks for the encouragment. As crabshells go....I know one source where you can get them if you are interested. I was getting them from him but (sniff sniff) due to complaints from family and neighbors I could no longer have it delivered 3 times a week to my house. :( Dont know if the drive to MDI for crab shells would be worth it to you and it does makes me sad (jonesing) to think they would be slipping through my hands, but he just hauls them to the dump. We bartered ( I supplied him with flowers for his wife) so it worked out well. email me if you are interested in the crab shells and I'll try to hook you up. |

| The thought of crab shells slipping through my gloveless hands makes me want to wash like Howard Hughes. Did you say this guy delivered on MDI though? I may know of someone who might want them. I'll have to check. For me, a better option is to let them accumulate and then get a big load. But that's probably not possible for the supplier. I keep posting this picture, but I haven't done so on this thread yet. This is how my truck and trailer look with a load of seaweed. Crab is denser, so it doesn't get piled as high. But it gives some idea of what I mean by a big load.
The parties aren't regular or part of a formal organization. This was just a holiday party at which many were farmers. If you want info on how to crash them then I'm not sure what to say, except maybe I should throw one in late winter and see who shows up. I'm in the phone book if you want more info. Dan |
RE: Roll Call ...All Maineiacs please report in...part two
| | |
| thats quite the serious load of seaweed there in that picture! I will be gone for the winter, so I may need to check back in the Spring, except that I will probably be too busy with the gardens and other chores to attend any parties, thank you though. I was more interested in a formal farmer get together type thing, but nothing so formal as like a master gardeners program thing. Just some local farmers doing the self sustaining organic methods, or csa types. cheers |
RE: Roll Call ...All Maineiacs please report in...part two

| I guess the party you really missed was MOFGA Farmer-To-Farmer, an annual conference held in Bar Harbor. It was the first weekend in November. There's always next year. Dan |
