Do I have blueberry shoots, or something else?

| There were several old blueberry bushes on our property when we started building. I've cut the dead branches out and trimmed them a little for height (they were huge). One of them has bright red 2' tall or so (like red twig dogwood) shoots coming up around the base, but not FROM the actual bush. Almost the way an Annabelle hydrangea will get volunteers. Are these blueberry shoots? Or something else? DH admitted he's been mowing them for the last 2 years, I've told him to leave them alone 'til I know what they are (not that you can mow with snow on the ground!).

| High bush blueberries will sucker from the base. And I think that's what you're seeing. High bush blueberries are wonderful, native, easy care shrubs with year round interest. One of my favorites. |

| Thanks, Chelone. Should we remove the suckers? |
