When to till?

Posted by peterc38 (My Page) on

Hi,

I live in southwestern Maine and this year will be my first vegetable garden. I have an area about 20 x 25 ft. Last September I added a lot of compost to this area, rototilled and planted winter rye.

When is the best time to till the rye under? I still have some snow in this area, but I assuming as soon as this finishes melting and the soil can be worked?

Also, where is the best place to have soil tested?

Thanks,

Peter

Cooperative Extension. I'd wait unitl the mositure has dissipated and dig down with a shovel to make certain the sub soil isn't frozen. End of April? I lived in So. Portland at one time.
