Using concrete molds for paths/patios

I am hoping to add a patio and some stone walkways to a section of my garden this year. I have looked at some paving stones at Home Depot but have also thought about using one of those molds that are shaped like cobblestones and filled with concrete since this would be more economical. Has anyone tried this? How do the results hold up to Maine winters? Any suggestions as to suppliers?

Last fall, I did some experimenting with hypertufa, which is cement based, and all my beginner projects made it through the winter just fine. I used old bread pans to make some blocks that are very similar to cobblestone size. The downside I see for doing a whole patio is the curing time, block by block, at temps above 50-55. If you have a place indoors to set them up, unmold them and keep them wet for a couple of weeks, you could build up a good supply of finished "stones". You might want to check out the hypertufa forum here for some info and ideas. I got all my supplies at Home Depot. Kat

You know, I have seen some pretty cool paths and walkways on HGTV where they use old cement chunks that are being thrown away. Like maybe from an old building site or something. I didn't think they would look as nice as they do. But they look terrific. Cheap too!!!

We used the forms your speaking of about 5 years ago. We were pleased with the results and they still look good. We made a path 3ft wide x 20ft long.

My niece ysed these a few years ago and tinted the cement with earthy colors. I thought they were granite until she told me what she had done. Good Luck

We used a Quikcrete "WalkMaker" form for a front walk. It's been in place two years now and looks great. Easy in that we didn't have to prepare the ground other than we removed the turf.
