Proven Winners, TMV

Recently, a grower brought to our attention that Proven Winners had issued a precautionary statement about a virus, possibly tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), detected in sunsatia nemesia cultivars 'cranberry', 'lemon' and 'pineapple. Thus far, in our visits to greenhouses we have not observed any symptoms. However, we would like to encourage growers to continue to watch these plants as symptoms may appear as temperatures rise. Look for mottling or streaking in the foliage, distorted new growth and unusual looking flowers.

Be aware that handling plant material easily spreads TMV. Wash hands after handling any potentially infected plants. For pictures of TMV on petunia visit http://www.state.me.us/agriculture/pi/horticulture/tmv.htm>;.

Most greenhouses seem to be off to a good start this spring with relatively few pest problems so far. However, we have noticed more aphids then usual this spring. Growers should keep their eyes open for these and other insect pests and diseases. Aphid populations can increase rapidly. Control these pests early before they cause plant damage.

Please feel free to call (207)287-3891 or email with any of your plant related questions.

Have a great growing season!
