flowering tree id?

Hi folks,
I've posted this to the "name that plant" forum without any luck. I'm hoping I'll have better luck asking regionally. I'm seeing these blooming in Cumberland and York county right now - some are just starting to fade. I at first thought it was a cherry, but am now leaning toward plum since the flowers come out before the leaves. This is a wild growing cultivar. Anyone recognize?

Check out the pictures of American Plum (prunus americana) at this website: http://www.cnr.vt.edu/dendro/dendrology/Syllabus2/factsheet.cfm?ID=541 Looks pretty close to your picture. . . |

Hi, I have the same question, it's everywhere around here too. I actually thought it was a flowering pear. My neighbor has many of these in her yard and I'm wondering if it's odd that some have a single trunk like a tree and others have multiple trunks like a shrub. Any thoughts? I was thinking I might take a clipping to a local nursery and see what they think. I'll let you know if I end up doing that. Neesie |

| I had actually looked at the american plum, but had discounted it because none of the photos depicted the same red center. I've marked the trees with ribbon so I can check them out later in the season. Must be something the birds like, since I've never actually seen the fruit on these. |

| I don't know either, but will check around. But I wanted to say what a nice photo of the blossoms you took. Joanie D. |
