Will the Rain Ever Stop?

Folks---I know it does no good to complain about the weather, but I think we all have the right to whine a little at this point :( Will we ever see the sun again? Will it ever get warm enough so I can put my seedlings out? Will it dry up enough so I can reseed some patches in my lawn? Will all my roses die of blackspot? Enquiring minds want to know. . .

Keep your chin up Mainerose, they say it's going to be 70 degrees on Memorial day!.My poor Daffs.and Tulips are battered to the ground, the dog will not go out,and the red squirrels have eaten large holes in the bird seed container.I went to Lowes and got a tin bin early this morning and every one was complaing about the rain.I was the only customer in the plant dept.Regards Josie

I've never whined more about the weather than I have today. The wind ripped the roof off the greenhouse last night. We were replacing it at sunrise this morning. I hate this expression but it applies - this sucks.

I had big expensive bare root hostas that I have had soaking in a bucket. I finally doaned a rain coat and went out and planted them in the rain today. I had to use a row boat to get back across the lawn to the house! Does sound a bit better for this week end. I have yet to get my plants put on the graves for Memorial Week End. Hope to Friday or Saturday morning. The cats take one look out the door and run . Think sun! |

I would LOVE to see some sun! This is our vacation week and it has rained every day. Our intentions were to work on the house we are building and the rain put a stop to that for various reasons. Luckily, I had last Friday off too and that was a nice day and I went and shoveled bunches of compost that a man who owns a supermarket is selling. I put it into buckets and bags. It's nice stuff made from fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, and horse bedding. Then I had to mix it into my raised beds and make up some mixtures of it and topsoil for buckets I will put some squash in. I also planted lettuce and chard seeds in the rain. I also added bark mulch in the rain around some trees and my raised beds. I do what I can do. I would really like to be doing more planting and just basking in the sunshine. I need to stain a picnic table and a bench. Tom needs to load up and prepare his boat for fishing. Rain is getting in the way of everything. Not much we can do about it though. So we drive around and buy things instead. And eat. Joanie D.

I'm right there with you guys. I managed to finish mowing the lawn last Saturday, just as the rain was beginning. I planted the second floor windowboxes and the poor plants have YET to see sunshine. I've taken pity on the Impatiens, they're more tender than good ol' geraniums. I want to put the awnings up, but am unwilling to do it in the rain. ICK. My daffodils are battered and the peonies have taken quite a beating, too. The ferns and hostas look sensational, though. I'm sick to death of mining the catbox, too. They go out, trot around the house, ask to be let back in, and then make a bee line for the catbox... the dog hasn't gotten any serious exercise in several days. I'd settle for a peek at the sun right about now.

@#$%^&**&^%$#@! One day maybe but it ain't so bad the lettuce and the many transplants are up and happy it's all about good drainage and no slugs. Raised beds even only slightly really helps. Sunshine would be most wonderful if only for my soul. Making mudpies in the compost Dale

I suppose this wrain will bring in a record bumper crop of mosquitoes and black flies...sorry to add to the dreary subject. The pully to my chickens coop broke. That means I need to get insde the coop and fix it so the door can open and close and the chickens can get out out there house and into their yard. I sometimes have to keep the chickens out of their house to get eggs and so they dont escape into my gardens and undo all my pansies looking for worms. The goats arent complaining too much and the geese just love it all! My kids are starting to get to me by the end of the day as they need to get outside and not be running inside so much. hopefully there is "light" at the end of this rainy week. The new pond we tried to drain is now full again. I wanted to clean it out and get all the junk out of the bottom of it...we havent even had a chance to put a drain or liner in it yet. A pair of mallard ducks have declared it their new home, and the boys love it being full again! I have all my plants laying around in pots and 6-pks still in the gardens and not planted. I may do as Maine_gardener an djust do it in the rain. It is awfully cold and muddy...I'll go buy some dish washing gloves to work with. lol At least I dont have to worry about any watering . I did lose 1/4 of a very old lilac shrub (12 feet tall) it must of been over 75 years old. I cut all the buds off and about 12" to set in water as the buds are very tight. The winds are not as bad as they have been. thats good I heard the blueberry farmers have concern as the blueberries are blooming right now and the kept bees dont do well in the rain, however the natural pollinators will work in the rain and are more hardy than the honey bees. I was talking to an orgainc BLueberry Farmer in Blue Hill earlier this week. Visualize sunshine and happy plants and happy gardeners in Maine!

I put down some grass seed early this week, thinking I'd take advantage of the moist conditions, but I fear it has washed away. Thank goodness I have raised beds, or else my peas, lettuce, and carrots would be drowned by now. My eggplant and peppers are still in the greenhouse and sulking (it's cold in there too, but at least they're out of the wind). I had to bring my tomatoes indoors because they really didn't look well. I haven't even shopped for annuals yet.

If it ever stops raining it'll probably drought next. Then we'll be wishing we could get some rain. Just wish we wouldn't get it all at once. Our yard is so flooded we're sure to lose trees & bushes planted in the lower areas. It's usually wet there for a couple of weeks after the snow melt, then it dries up nicely, but this year it's just saturated & we're pumping as much as we can to drain the area. Like others here, we've been working out in the rain, fertilizing, weeding, planting, etc.

DH came home with a hoop house Wednesday. We're hoping it doesn't pour over the three day weekend so that we can get it up without drowning.

The rain tally here in Cape Neddick was 5+" in 5 days. There is standing water in virtually every low area up and down our road. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to soak in.

Do you think the oil comp.'s are producing this cold and damp? insted of oil? The wood stove got cleaned so dont wish to dirty. so keep putn on the heat.I'm usin more oil in the last two months than in Jan. My timing on putting things outside have not been good. My nesturshums two hangin, put one outside and it almost died from sun and heat but recovered. the next went out in the clouds but now(and it wes lookin good and strong) stems are dying- root what ever. so bummed. I harvested the seads last year and was so happy when the second batch of seads grew. First batch did noting. I had never had them befor and fell in love with them. so did the hummers. Perhaps I should think of a water garden? If ya cant beet them, join in and swim with the ducks? Please stop dancin... some one has got to be sleep dancing..LOL |
