Japanese Beetle

I am looking for a better way to control Japanese beetle, any suggestion? We put down 50# of Milky Spore last year,(1/2 acre)and then found out that it will not work in Maine, because of the cold temperature. The Extension office is not recomended this method.

I spend 4 hours picking the adult beetle and put it in a bleach and soap solution the last two days.

How do you control your?

RE: Japanese Beetle

The only sure-fire way I know of is hand-picking. Most people say traps are useless, but we have set them well away from the rose garden and that seems to reduce the numbers on the bushes. Saw our first beetles this past Saturday. I think the rain must have slowed them down quite a bit.

"Most people say traps are useless..."

You won't hear that from me. I'm seeing only a few of the beetles in my garden but the pests are flocking to the trap 50' from the western garden fence.

As a plus, the rose chafers that were devouring my newly transplanted blackberries, left overnight to disappear into the trap.

RE: Japanese Beetle

They showed up in my garden about 3 days ago. I have been hand picking them and it seems to be keeping the damage to a minimum. The majority seem to be concentrated on a large patch of weeds about 20ft from my garden although I can't figure out why. Doesn't matter though I'll kill them no matter where I find them.
