polyantha roses

Has anyone here grown polyantha roses? I got some last year to replace my miniature roses that didn't make it through that bad winter of the year before.
Mine are doing really well again so far this year (covered in buds) and I'm thinking I may want to add some more for next year.
I first saw them in a book on Canadian gardens, and I investigated them quite a bit on line, so I know they should do well for me here, but hey, we all know that's not written in stone.
I'd like to get some straight dope from Mainers. Have you had them? Did they do well? Anything attack yours? I've got a slug problem, but when I spray the roses the blasted slugs leave them alone. I tried slug bait, but the critters don't seem to care.

I tried to Climbing Cecile Brunners on a lovely Gothic arch---unfortunately, I lost one the first winter and gave up on the other because it never really grew or produced well. However, I am in a cold Zone 4. In coastal Zone 5, I think they would do pretty well for you. They are lovely---I only wish I could grow them!

I thought I'd share a picture to show how my roses are doing, and why I'd like to plant more. I posted some other pictures of my garden over in the garden photos section.

The reds and pinks are both polyantha, Fairy roses. They just started blooming this week. Last year they were going just as strong well into fall.

Wow!---they are lovely! Wish I could grow them here, but once bloomers and rugosas seem to be the only thing that survive for me.

Kennebunker, I also have a huge slug problem...something has been at my Kerria Japonica shrub and I'd be willing to bet it's slugs. After trying the beer method and various natural ways to get rid of them I went ahead and purchased 'Sluggo'. That did the trick for me so far. My Asters and Mallow are ok for the time being...I'm going to apply 'Sluggo' around the base of my Kerria tomorrow.

I have the Pink Fairy and it does very well. I want to get the Red Fairy too.

Don't give up on polyanthas just because Mme Cecile Brunner died. It is part tea and a lot more tender than the rest of the crew.
Try The Fairy, Margo Koster, Marie Pavie.....
All of these have survived -25 for me. And colder. At -30 Yvonne Rabier and Cameo died back to the ground but came up and bloomed again.
The trick is to plant deep with bud union 3" below ground level or with the crown of an own-root plant also set deep.
That way when it dies back, it will make a come back.

Very nice photos, kennebunker.

I don't know what "category" of rose this would be in, but my yellow "Flower Carpet" rose still has 3 flowers and 12 buds! I will get different colors of that type of rose next year. Even though it's called "carpet rose" it's not a ground creeper type. It's about 2 feet tall with dark green foliage. Pretty.

You can click on the link below and then click on the list of names and see all the pretty colors they come in. I think I will want one of each! I didn't buy from that company. I just found it doing a search to show you the colors. I bought mine from a nursery in the Augusta area.

My Polyanthas are covered in buds, except for one, I think it's "resting".
