I would be very surprised if you got any flowers at this point. These plants are native to Africa and like long, hot summers. I grew them from seed indoors a few years ago and planted out young plants at least a foot tall in late May. They grew like Topsy but I never got a single flower before frost took them. Sorry for the bad news.

Will plant the scarlet runner beans I saved from last years plants. They were very successful, but I thought the color of the hyacinth beans was preferred by the person I am growing them for. The hyacinth beans have been in the ground several days now but I will plant the others and see what happens. She may get flowers from one, or perhaps both and I don't think she cares if the colors clash. Thanks.

I planted a 6" tall hyacinth bean vine in May a couple years ago and by August I had beautiful purple blooms followed by really neat deep purple iridescent bean pods. The vine must have gotten at least 10 feet tall. I had it in an 8-gallon planter on a deck with north west exposure-- I don't know if any of that contributed to its blooming.

That's very interesting. I am jealous! I had seen this plant at the Philly flower show and really wanted it. Mine grew that tall but never flowered, as I noted above. No flowers, no beans. I am wondering if containing the roots in containers, as you did, forced the plant to produce flowers as there was no more room for roots! How much did you feed it? And, gee, zone 4 and NW exposure. Congrats!
