What are those beautiful wild lilies I keep seeing on the roadsides just now? The blooms are downfacing. Any suggestions where I could get some?

You probably mean the Canada lilies? They are quite tall and look like dangling bells? They are a native wildflower. I dug one a few years ago and put it in my garden, but it only lasted just a few short years and disappeared. I'd like to get some more. I think they like wet spots? I always see them in fields or ditches. They are very pretty!

I bought a small bulb at McLaughlin gardens a few years was, and all of a sudden found one growing on the hillside that could not have possibly have come from seeds from the bought one, because it did not flower the first year.

RE: Apricot lilies/Canada lilies

Just a caution to everyone: PLEASE DO NOT dig Canada lilies (Lilium canadense) from the wild. These beautiful plants are diminishing due to over-collecting. The exception of course is if an area is about to be destroyed for development. They are available from many nurseries, including McLaughlin and Wake Robin, and are not too difficult to start from seed.

Thanks for the ID. They are definitely Lilium canadensis. Don't worry Ginny, I won't be digging any up. I'll try and order some bulbs this fall.
