By "brown spots" do you mean that there are areas of dead grass, or are you referring to dead spots on individual leaves of grass? Do you know what kinds or varieties of grass are in your lawn?

use alfalfa meal mixed with corn meal. You can buy it at most seed and feed stores.

compost applied on top and worked in everyyear would also work very well. Be sure the compost is aged compost and not fresh...

I would do a search as well in the organic section, I avoid commercial chemicals around my family's living areas.

From past experiences with the little league fields, I thought overwatering was a cause of red thread. 1 inch of water per week is plenty.
