need to plant some bushes at my cottage

| I have a summer cottage and want to plant some bushes(Maybe late August, early September). I need something I can plant around and under a maple tree(shady to partial shade). I also need something that doesn't get too tall(maybe 5-6 feet) and it needs to be something the deer don't like(we have plenty of deer aroung here). Also, the soil isn't so great, it tends to be fairly sandy. I am open to deciduous or non-deciduous, although I am hoping these bushes will block the view of an old, decaying cottage that is behind us. If I were to get deciduous, I would want something that blooms in summer. I will be able to water the plants while I am there. Then a family member will water them for me for the rest of September and possibly early October. After that the only water the bushes will get will be from the rain, until we go back up there late spring of next year. I think I am in zone 5(just below Portland). |

We've got a hemlock and some junipers that grew rather well with not too much attention after the first year. Once established they don't need much water, and they're among the few things I have that the deer have never bothered with. You can cut them back severely to keep them within size limits. We had one that was quite badly bashed by ice and snow that slid off our third floor roof and we had to chop a lot off of it. It looks good as new. A neighbor has lilacs that occasionally run amok. They grow well here, but they're kind of slow growers at least to start with. Hers get more water than mine. That's about it as far as what I have in my drier, poorer soil area. |

| Bayberry, Fothergilla, Rhus aromatica, Witch Hazels are also possibilities. |
