Where to find end of season deals

Quite often posts refer to end of season pricing and good deals. Can you tell me when end of season is for shrubs and trees and soil amendments? And any suggestions in the Bangor/MidCoast/Ellsworth area? Surry Gardens has half price specials on many perennials right now. They have 3" plugs of all kinds of ferns (as well as perennials)for less than $2. I repotted the ferns into 1 gallon pots and they look like they were purchased that way in only a few days. Healthy with good root systems. I have just completed 2 large lasagna beds and don't want to plant until spring. Do you think 1 gallon plants would make it if just set into the beds, pot and all and then mulched over? I love this forum and hope to see more postings as fall progresses. Laurie

Yes the potted plants should make it just fine if planted and mulched over. It's usually not til the end of the month/Sept. that the nurseries start having sales. At most, many around here mark things down only 25%. But that can be a good deal if there's a certain shrub you've been wanting. Home Depot, at least the one by me, put a lot of its stock at 50% last year at the end of the summer. Limited selection, but I was able to pick up a topiary conifer, which I otherwise couldn't afford.

Thanks, Veilchen. I will keep my eyes open and will post if I see any exceptional offerings. The lasagna bed should be an interesting experiment. Laurie
