dragonflies/ why?

| I've barely ever seen dragon flies around our yard. Last week we had a campfire in our yard to sit by and roast marshmellows, we did this for the first time. We dosed the fire at night, and the next day went away for 5 days. When we got back today, the entire area has about 25 dragonflies just circling the campfire, round and round. What is going on? There is NO standing water. What is attracting them? |

| Ellen, "What is attracting them?" Most likely mosquitoes, which they catch and eat on the wing. And the mosquitoes may have been attracted by the carbon dioxide from the campfire, as well as you campers. We have impressive "battle of Britain" dragonfly displays in our back yard. They like to go for the mosquitoes in open areas. MM |

| Hi elenkao...it sounds like you have an infestation of the rare Maine Moosekee dragon fly. I'm sure it has something to do with the scent from the marshmellows you were roastin' over the fire. The only thing you can do is stick a marshmellow on the trunk of your car and drive east into the sunrise some clear mornin' and the dragonflies will follow. Leave the marshmellow stuck on a roadside tree a few miles from your house and the df's will circle the tree and not follow you home. My old uncle Clyde has to do this three or four times a year cos he loves to toast marshmellows on his front lawn. Cos ol' uncle Clyde likes hard cider...so we wonder about him sometimes. Franklin |
