we heard a lot of ruckus outside. There were seven (7!) bluebirds checking out all of the bird houses! Guess they'll come back again next Spring, for sure. We also had a mockingbird perched on our deck.

Guess they were inspecting the real estate! What birds will you have this Winter, Elaine? We enjoy the cardinals and chickadees that live in our shrubbery during the cold weather. I don't put out any food for them, they seem to get along fine on the berries in the yew & privet and the seeds in the tiny pine cones.

Wehave lots of chickadees, an occasional robin and bluejays. I don't feed them either. We have lots of berries on the crabapples and holly shrubs. I think we have goldfinches (drab feathers now). They also spread seeds in the yard which are sometimes neat surprises in Spring! We have two fishing poles mounted on the fence around the yard that make for great perches.

We have loads of chickadees, we love them. Right now there are lots of nuthatches, bluejays and woodpeckers. I do put food out all winter, though mostly for the tiny red squirrels and the occassional sleepy chipmunk looking for a snack. I come from the land of huge gray squirrels, but even my mom likes these. And they only have so much territory. The bluejays can go to the next yard. I do wish a cardinal or two would visit. I'm working on getting the place covered w/critter friendly plants.

Elaine---I'm so excited---after YEARS of putting up bluebird houses, we finally saw a single bluebird a week ago! It's the first one I've ever seen -I'm from away :)- but my husband was ecstatic! He remembers them very fondly from his childhood and has been trying to attract them for years. I hope the bird found our neighborhood desirable and returns in the spring.

I very rarely ever see cardinals in this part of Maine. I miss them as I use to see themoften in Connecticut. We have lots of ravens, ducks and skyrats...er seaguls ( sorry Jonathan Living!)
