composting experiment help

I am experimenting with a compost "recipe" and would like some opinions on it. I raked my last years leaves up and shredded them with my lawn mower. Then I sifted them through a 5/8" screen to end up with "cornflake sized" bits. I then mixed together 1 part leaves to 2 parts soil. Should the previous years leaves be composted enough to use immediately?

Thanks!

RE: composting experiment help

Leaves alone do not become compost, and combined with soil aren't compost either, but leaf mold, which is made from leaves is a wonderful garden amendment, and that's what you---kind of---made. Chipped leaves break down faster than whole leaves, so they may be broken down enough. I make leaf mold from whole leaves, which I bag up and ignore for two years. When I open the bags up, I have dark, worm-filled leaf mold.

I'd feel comfortable using your leaf/soil mixture now, I think.

Oh, I meant to add...

there's a conmposting forum on Garden Web.

If this is your first attempt at composting, I think you're going to become a fan. It's quite addictive, and now is the time of year to gather materials.

RE: composting experiment help

You need some nitrogen in that mix!
Leaves alone are to high in their carbon:nitrogen ratio.

Try adding one of the following to your mix:
*Fresh glass clippings (free of chemicals of course)
*A 2 gallon watering can full of diluted fish fertilizer
*A bag of Shellfish Compost
*Some fresh manure. (warning: chicken manure is very high in nitrogen, so you'll have to use a lot less, than if you're using cow or horse manure)

MIX and TURN THOROUGHLY!
There's a great song that is the mantra of compost success, written by Pete Seeger, taken from the Bible and sung by the likes of The Byrds and Judy collins... it's called TURN, TURN, TURN!

I posted a link for some more help in composting .
It is a copy of the handout I use in my compost seminars.

Here is a link that might be useful: Understanding Compost
