Interesting tomato transplants near Portland?

| This may be an odd request, but I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a greenhouse within reasonable driving distance of Portland that sells heirloom and/or other interesting tomato transplants in spring. I strongarmed a friend into starting to grow tomatoes several years back by sending her transplants of the Santa grape tomatoes she loved. Since then, I've been sending other varieties too, but they don't do well with my amateur shipping. Seems it would be money better spent to provide a gift certificate instead.
So, if anyone could recommend a greenhouse in the Portland area that sells Santa and/or heirloom tomato starts, I would be grateful. Thanks!

Go check out Green Mountain Transplants in the spring. They are on Rt. 111, technically Arundel but just south of the Biddeford line. Less than a mile past the Home Depot near the Biddeford exit. They also do mail order but had a lot of problems this past year due to their move of operations from Vermont to here. I just counted 33 tomato varieties listed in their catalog, including many heirlooms.

Thanks for the suggestion and the link, veilchen! I probably won't get to check them out, since I'm in Minnesota, but it sounds like a better bet than shipping. They do have some interesting varieties. Thanks!

I have never been there, thanks veilchen for the info.

Oops, bitterwort, I looked at your zone and thought I saw "ME" instead of "MN". Green Mt. Transplants is a 20 min drive from Portland, and I would advise your friend to visit there to pick out some plants vs. mail ordering. (You can still send her a gift cert. she can use there). GMT offers an excellent selection of all kinds of plants, but this past year they had big problems filling all their mail orders due to construction problems. Besides, if your friend drives there to pick up her plants, she won't have to pay shipping. And there will be no minimum order.

No problem, veilchen. Your information was just what I needed and was hoping to get. (I'd love to come out and visit sometime, though.) It's hard to figure out where to get gift certificates from if you don't know what's there, so it's great having insider information from those of you who know. Just another great benefit of the GardenWeb. Thanks! Bitterwort

I would also suggest Backyard Organics, which is just off Route 25 in Standish. That's just before the Saco River bridge. I bought Brandywine and Cherokee Purple there this year and they performed marvelously!
