Guess what I found...

I was shopping at Toys R Us and I found (in the "science" section) a mini vacuum for sucking up bugs. This is designed for the little burgeoning entomologist you might have at home but, dammit, I'm going to use it on the beetles that plague my plants!

I want to avoid chemicals, I can't stand plucking those things off plants with my bare hand and using gloves makes it impossible... sooo... I am going to give this little "vacuum" a try. It's supposed to have a strong enough vacuum to pluck the bugger up but not damage the bug (not that I care about damaging beetles) but hopefully it also will not damage my plants!

I don't know why I mention this now, I won't be able to try it until spring but I am just so EXCITED! How come no one thought of this before. A bug vacuum!

In my wildest dreams I imagine this thing sucking the buggers right out of the air as they circle my hydrangea.

Vacuuming bugs can work. I haven't seen the Toys 'R Us bug vacuum, but I have recently used a little battery powered computer vacuum for sucking aphids off of indoor plants. When we lived in St. Louis, we had a white fly epidemic on our tomatoes, and our full-sized vacuum hose was effective at sucking them out of the air and off the tomato plants.

I bought one last year and it doesn't work at all. It didn't even have enough suction power to suck up an aphid.

Mine was a CleanDr by Digital Innovations and I bought it at Staples. It uses 4 AA batteries, and it does tend to "eat batteries". I have already used 8 batteries in it. I got a coupon that came with it to mail off for a "free" ($5 shipping and handling) power adapter to run it off of 110 volts. I'll probably do that. It came with several attachments, including one cone with a fairly small inlet hole, and that one works best for sucking up aphids. The brush attachment didn't work well.

I also have computer keyboard attachments for a standard vacuum cleaner, but I haven't tried them yet. The little battery powered unit was much handier to use.
